Most first purchases go wrong for the same three reasons: buying on size, buying on the number of vibration patterns, and buying on price alone. None of those predict whether you will actually use the thing. Here is what does.
Start smaller than you think
Almost everyone overestimates on their first purchase. Product photography flatters scale, and a dildo that looks moderate on a white background is considerably more imposing in hand. Measure something you are already comfortable with and buy near that number, not above it. For internal toys, around 12 to 14 cm insertable and 3 to 4 cm across covers most first purchases comfortably.
You can always size up later. Sizing down means buying twice.
Motor quality beats pattern count
A listing advertising thirty vibration modes is telling you about firmware, not about the motor. In practice most people find one or two settings they like and never touch the rest. A well-made bullet vibrator can be stronger than a much larger toy with a longer feature list.
Rechargeable models hold their strength better than ones running on small button cells, which fade noticeably as the battery drains. If you are choosing between two toys at a similar price, take the rechargeable one.
Material is the part you cannot fix later
For anything used internally, body-safe silicone is worth the extra money. It is non-porous, which means it can genuinely be cleaned rather than just rinsed. TPE and jelly materials are softer and cheaper but porous: they hold moisture, they degrade faster, and they cannot be fully sanitised.
Whatever you buy, use water-based lubricant. Silicone lubricant bonds with silicone toys and ruins the surface, and oil-based products damage both silicone and TPE.
External before internal
If you genuinely have no idea what you respond to, an external toy is the lowest-risk starting point. A small bullet or egg vibrator is inexpensive, quiet, easy to hold and requires no commitment. Once you know what you like, adding an internal or combination toy is a much better-informed decision.
Check the base before you buy anything for anal use
This is the one rule with no exceptions. Anything going anywhere near the rectum needs a flared base or a retrieval ring, because the rectum has no natural stop. A toy without one can be drawn fully inside, and that is a hospital visit rather than an inconvenience.
A note on price
The cheapest toys in any category are usually cheap because of the material, the motor, or both. That does not mean the most expensive option is right either. Somewhere in the middle, in body-safe silicone, with a rechargeable motor and a clearly stated size, is where most people get the best result for the money.
