Almost every anal injury that ends up in an emergency room traces back to four avoidable things. This is the one category where getting it wrong has consequences beyond disappointment — and the four rules below cover nearly all of it.

Anal Play Safety: The Rules That Actually Matter
In this guide
Why is a flared base non-negotiable?
The rectum has no natural stop. Unlike the vagina, there is nothing at the far end to prevent an object being drawn further in by muscle contraction — and once it passes a certain point you cannot get it back yourself.
A flared base or retrieval ring is the only thing standing between you and surgical removal. This applies to everything: plugs, beads, vibrators, and anything improvised. If a toy does not have one, it is not an anal toy, regardless of its shape.
Every product in our anal range has one, and bead strands like those in our anal beads guide end in a ring wider than the widest bead.
Why does diameter matter more than length?
Beginners almost always focus on length, which is the wrong measurement. Comfort is decided by how wide the widest point is. Under 3 cm across is a sensible ceiling for a first plug, and 2.5 to 3.5 cm is the beginner band.
Size up across separate sessions, not within one. Tissue does not stretch to accommodate the way people expect, and pushing through resistance in a single session is how tearing happens.
Our small jewelled plug at ₹1,049 sits in that starting band, and our sizing guide covers the progression in half-centimetre steps.
How much lubricant does anal play need?
Far more than vaginal play, because anal tissue produces none at all. This is the mechanical difference that catches people out.
Every bit of glide has to be added, and it needs reapplying more often than you would expect because it absorbs and dries. Use a thicker water-based lubricant, use more than feels necessary, and top it up before it feels necessary rather than after.
If something starts to feel dry mid-session, stop and reapply rather than pushing on. Water-based only on silicone toys — our compatibility guide covers why silicone lube ruins them.
What does pain actually mean here?
Discomfort that eases as you relax is normal. Sharp pain is not, and neither is bleeding. Both mean stop — not slow down.
The tissue involved is thin and heals slowly, and a small tear is an infection risk as well as a painful week. Streaked blood on a toy warrants a break of several days; more than streaking warrants a doctor.
Going slowly is not a beginner concession you graduate out of. Experienced users still warm up, every session.
How do you clean anal toys?
Warm water and mild unscented soap immediately after use, paying attention to seams and the joins between beads where residue collects, then dry fully.
Non-porous materials — silicone, stainless steel, glass — can be properly sanitised, and solid steel or silicone with no motor can be boiled. A porous toy should never be shared between people.
Nothing moves from anal to vaginal use without being washed first, every time, without exception. Bacteria that live harmlessly in one place cause infections in the other. Full routine in cleaning and care, and our material comparison covers which is easier to keep clean.
What is different about prostate play?
A prostate massager is shaped to reach roughly 5 to 7 cm inside, toward the front of the body — the curve is what finds it, which is why straight toys usually miss.
Empty your bowels beforehand, use plenty of thick lubricant, insert slowly lying on your side with knees drawn up, and let it settle before moving it. Our beaded prostate massager at ₹2,799 is a sensible first one, and our prostate guide covers position and technique.
If you have existing prostate symptoms, are on blood thinners, or have haemorrhoids or fissures, speak to a doctor before starting.
Does vibration change the risk?
Not the four rules — a vibrating plug still needs a flared base, still needs the right diameter, still needs lubricant.
What it does change is insertion: the muscle tends to relax in response to vibration rather than brace against it, which many people find makes a plug easier rather than harder. Vibration also causes migration over a long session, so the base matters more, not less. Our vibrating plug guide covers it.
When should you see a doctor?
Bleeding beyond light streaking, pain that persists for more than a day, any object you cannot retrieve, or signs of infection. None of these are things to wait out, and none of them are unusual enough to be embarrassing to a doctor.
Every anal product we list states its diameter, length and material, and whether the base is flared. If a listing is missing a measurement you need, ask and we will check it. Browse butt plugs, anal beads or prostate massagers.
