The formats, and who each suits

On making your own

A lot of people search for this, so it is worth answering properly rather than pretending nobody does.

The usual homemade versions are a towel and a glove, a sponge in a bottle, or a sock. They work in the narrow sense that friction is friction. The problems are specific.

Cleaning

Rinse the canal with warm water and mild unscented soap straight after use. Open-ended sleeves take seconds, because water runs right through. Closed cups take longer — unscrew the base cap if there is one and leave it off.

Dry completely. Leaving one damp is how it goes bad, and a porous sleeve that has gone bad smells before it looks wrong.
