What the app adds over a plain remote

Three things a handheld remote cannot do.

It works over the internet, so a partner can control the toy from another city or another country. It lets you build and save custom patterns instead of cycling through presets. And some apps sync to music or react to sound.

If you only ever use a toy in the same room, a remote-control vibrator does that job for considerably less. The app premium is worth paying for distance, and not for much else.

The two ranges, which are different things

Every app toy has two separate connections, and listings routinely blur them.

Bluetooth range is phone to toy. Realistically eight to ten metres in open space, and less through a wall or a body. This is the link that drops out, and it is physics rather than price.

Internet range is phone to phone, and it is effectively unlimited. Long distance works because your partner's app talks to yours over the internet, and your own phone then talks to the toy across the room.

So "unlimited range" is true of the feature and never true of the last few metres. A dropout at the toy end is normal, not a fault.

The app is part of what you are buying

This is the section other shops skip.

An app controlled toy means installing a third-party app, usually creating an account, and granting Bluetooth and often location permissions. Android requires location access for Bluetooth scanning, which is why that request appears and why it looks alarming.

Before you buy, it is worth two minutes checking what the app stores. Use an email address you do not use elsewhere. Decline the optional social, community and friend-finding features unless you specifically want them. Check whether the app can sit behind your phone's fingerprint or face unlock.

None of that is a reason to avoid the category. It is a reason to set it up deliberately rather than tapping through.

Battery and charging

Bluetooth is a constant drain, so an app toy runs down faster than the same motor on a remote.

Charge fully before first use and before a long-distance session rather than during one. Most use proprietary magnetic cables, and losing the cable is the most common way one of these ends up in a drawer.

Materials, lubricant and cleaning

Body-safe silicone throughout. Water-based lubricant only, because silicone lubricant bonds to silicone and ruins it permanently.

Wash after every use in warm soapy water or a toy cleaner. Check the waterproof rating before submerging: wearables are often rated for splashes rather than immersion, and charging contacts are the weak point either way. Dry fully and store away from other silicone.
