The weight is the spec that matters

A light paddle delivers sting rather than thud. The impact stays on the surface of the skin instead of landing deep, and sting is far more forgiving to learn on. The star cut-outs are not decoration

Holes reduce air resistance, so the paddle moves faster through a swing. They also leave the pattern printed on the skin afterwards, which for a lot of people is most of the appeal.

Before you start

Agree a traffic-light system: green to continue, yellow to ease off, red to stop immediately. Decide which areas are off limits before anyone picks up the paddle, not during.

Using it

Practise on a pillow first. Aim for the fleshy part of the buttocks and the upper thighs, and stay well away from the spine, the kidneys, the tailbone and any joint. Warm up with light taps before anything harder, because cold skin bruises far more readily. With a 7.5 inch handle you can choke up for control on light work or hold long for a fuller swing.
