A crop is not a paddle

The striking face here is narrower than a broad paddle, and that changes the sensation completely. A wide paddle spreads force over a large area and lands as thud. This concentrates the same force into a smaller surface, so it stings sharply and you need far less effort behind the swing to be felt.

The embossed face prints onto the skin when the stroke lands flat and square. Angled strokes smear it, so it takes a little practice.

Before you start

Using it

Warm the skin with light taps before anything firmer. Cold skin bruises far more readily. Hold the handle firmly but keep the wrist relaxed, because a stiff wrist is what turns a controlled stroke into a heavy one. Stay on the fleshy part of the buttocks and upper thighs. Never the spine, lower back, kidneys, tailbone, joints or face. Spread strokes around rather than working one spot repeatedly, and check in often.

Afterwards

Look at the skin, soothe it if it needs it, and stay together for a while. Talk about what worked. Aftercare is part of the scene, not an optional extra.

Wipe with a damp cloth after use and store dry, hanging rather than folded.
